DIE!geon

DIE!geon is a print-and-play, roll-and-write game where you become a mercenary exploring crypts. This game really appeals to me because of its hack & slash theme and the strategic elements the roll-and-write mechanics add. The idea of venturing into monster-filled crypts with only dice and my strategy to guide me sounds incredibly engaging! I also find the art style very evocative. It feels like a mix of different styles. The only downside for me is that the publisher decided to launch this campaign for just a print-and-play offering. Hopefully we see a physical product in the near future.

This Kickstarter campaign features not one, but three science-themed board games: DNA, Habitopia, and Synthesis. Of the three, DNA has really captured my attention. In this game, you play as a scientist who’s a master of DNA cloning. The theme itself is fascinating, and the abstract puzzles seem engaging. They may not be dinosaurs, but it still looks like I can get my Jurassic Park on in this game.

Mining Colony: Master Plans is a mini-expansion for the strategic board game Mining Colony. While I haven’t played the original “Mining Colony,” I’ve heard great things about its depth and gameplay. This campaign is an opportunity to get the base game and the new expansion at a discounted price. Looks like a nice little tile-placement Euro game.

Onoda looks like a fascinating solo board game that recreates the experiences of soldier Hiroo Onoda, who spent 30 years on Lubang Island after World War II, believing the war was still ongoing. The game incorporates real events from Onoda’s life, adding a historical element to the gameplay. It’s a rather unique and heavier theme from what I would usually play, but the game looks well-executed and it looks like it’s worth giving it a shot.

Western Legends Stories is a game that tasks you with building a frontier settlement and leaving your mark on the Wild West. It takes the acclaimed game Western Legends and adds a campaign-driven narrative. What excites me about Western Legends Stories is that this opens up Western Legends to solo players for the first time. I also lik the emphasis on storytelling and creating a unique narrative with each playthrough. As a solo player, I often find myself immersed in the themes and stories of the games I play, and Western Legends Stories seems to double down on that experience. I’m eager to see how the game mechanics support the narrative and what kind of legendary tales I can weave in the Wild West.
